Good Fit Books for Reading

It is so important that children are reading 'Good Fit' books when they are reading independently.  They need to pick books that are not too easy but also not too hard.  I have taught them the '5 Finger' test to help them make good choices.  I stress to them that if they cannot read a word or they do not know the meaning of a word then they need to hold up a finger. One to two errors on a page is perfect.  The goal is that they can read and understand MOST of the book.  Note: I tend to see kids picking books that are too hard for them.
Here is a video of another way to look at picking 'Good Fit' books
Please help your child in finding 'Good Fit' books at home.  This will lead them to better reading comprehension (understanding) and help them to enjoy reading.

  1. Hey Gretchen!!
    Happy summer :)
I am a fan of this page you added--so useful for parents and families to use and access for guidance. I may have to "borrow" this idea ;)

  2. I think this is a great page Gretchen. I might steal this idea or something similar to it. I think it would be great to show students how to get to this page. They could use it as a resource at home or if they forget. Great idea.
